Top things to do in Ho Chi Minh

Visit Independence Palace

Norodom Palace was the original name of what is now known as the Independence Palace or the Reunification Palace. The Vietnamese general Ngo Dinh Diem used it as his center of operations from 1961 until his death in 1963.

In 1962, Diem's own air force bombed the palace in an attempt to murder him, due to his immense unpopularity. In preparation for a potential repeat performance, he chose to construct a new home there, complete with a bomb shelter in the basement. His worst nightmare came true when his own soldiers killed him.

Throughout the Vietnam War (or American War, to use the local terminology), the president of South Vietnam resided at the newly constructed Reunification Palace. Its architecture from the 1960s is just stunning. It has traditional furniture and design from the 1960s and is open-air. The lower level is occupied by meeting rooms, while the second floor is home to an outstanding bar. The basement serves as a communication center and bomb shelter.

Additionally, in 1975, a North Vietnamese army tanker slammed through the main gate, therefore ending the Vietnam War at this location. Nowadays, no tourist to Ho Chi Minh City visits Ho Chi Minh City without seeing Reunification Palace. The 200,000 VND note also features it.

Independence Palace is open every day from 8 am until 3:30 pm.

Adults pay 65,000 VND and children pay 15,000 VND to enter.

Check Out The War Remnants Museum

You will never think at the Vietnam War deaths the same way after seeing the War Remnants Museum. For the most part, we Americans have been shielded from the horrors that our nation committed against Vietnam. Plus, I guarantee that this museum will evoke strong emotions in you—if you're anything like me.

Various vehicles and weaponry utilized during the battle are on show in the outside area. On the lower level, you may see anti-war posters and artifacts on exhibit. As you make your way up the steps, the museum becomes both more fascinating and more challenging to view.

Pictures of the devastation caused by the herbicide Agent Orange that was deployed over Vietnam are heartbreaking and disturbing. Exposure to the chemical has caused disabilities that have been handed down through several generations. Additionally tragic is the Requiem display, which features photographs of journalists murdered in the line of duty.

Experiencing the War Remnants Museum will undoubtedly be a sobering and illuminating journey. Even while it's not exactly a picnic, it's definitely a top attraction in Ho Chi Minh City.

The War Remnants Museum is a war museum at 28 Vo Van Tan, in District 3, Ho Chi Minh City

Price: 40,000d for adults, and 20,000d for children aged 6-16. Children under 6 enter free.

Check in at the Post Office in Saigon

Sending a mail from the central post office is another top attraction in Ho Chi Minh City! Built in the late 19th century, the Gothic-style Ho Chi Minh City Post Office is a historical landmark in the city. Among the city's French buildings, it stands head and shoulders above the others.

From the outside, the structure is stunning, but what truly makes it shine is the interior. Admire the stunning marble flooring, enormous arches, and row of vintage wooden phone booths on the left side.

On most days, you'll find the Central Post Office in Ho Chi Minh City bustling with activity, as it is still in use. One popular thing to do for tourists in Vietnam is to pick up some postcards from the souvenir stalls and mail them home.

Not far from the city's post office is the cathedral, Notre Dame Basilica, which is well worth a visit in and of itself.

Try a Sigon's Craft Beer Sample

An incredible new craft beer culture is emerging in Ho Chi Minh City. Brewers from all over the globe are flocking here to experiment with unique flavor profiles. Modern and exciting tasting rooms sometimes include tasty nibbles to go along with their beers.

Go shopping in Ben Thanh Market

Ben Thanh Market is the go-to spot for travelers looking Vietnam do some shopping in Ho Chi Minh City. Keep in mind that we indicated it is the most visited spot, not the greatest. We don't like it since it's too busy, expensive, and filled with generic souvenirs. The overly enthusiastic women at each booth will try to bother you. Also, haggle for a better deal if you plan on shopping in Ben Thanh Market. Half to three quarters of their asking price is what you should pay.

Visit Binh Tay Market in District 5 for a more genuine market experience. These markets are also favorites of ours:

  • Central Market (Address: 4 Phạm Ngũ Lão)
  • Saigon Square 1 (Address: 81 Nam Kỳ Khởi Nghĩa)
  • Russian Market (Address: 328 Võ Văn Kiệt)

There are a number of big malls in the area, including the Vincom Center Mall in District 1 and the Saigon Centre Mall in District 2, for those who want to shop where the people do.

For the most up-to-date styles from trendy Vietnamese labels, check out The New Playground (26 Lý Tự Trọng) if you're looking for something a little bit different. The Vincom Center Mall is directly across the street. For more information on the Hello Weekend Market, which we like, see their Facebook page. The site changes every few weeks.

Visit the HCM City Museum

This museum is ideal for those who like to spend a day learning about the heritage, customs, and history of Ho Chi Minh City. Not only is the structure stunning in and of itself, but it also features several fascinating exhibits showcasing ancient ceramics, coins, and other items. The struggle for Vietnamese independence is also covered extensively in the museum.

Among the several military vehicles on display outside is the plane that a South Vietnamese soldier commandeered to detonate the bomb at the Reunification Palace.

Address: No.65, Ly Tu Trong Street, Ben Nghe Ward, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City

Opening hours: 8 am – 5 pm (from Monday to Sunday)

Entrance fee: 30,000 VND

Saigon's Coffee Culture

The Vietnamese have a strong affinity for coffee. Plus, there are charming cafes on almost every block of the city.

Stop by District 1's The Workshop if you're in the mood to get some work done. With their snob-worthy coffee, dependable Wi-Fi, and ample seating, they offer everything you could want. Padma de Fleur, a florist turned coffee business, serves your cup with a little flower if you're searching for an Instagram-worthy coffee photo. Even more posh is L'Usine, a coffee establishment serving up delicious takes on traditional American morning fare.

If you're in a hurry and need a cup of coffee on the run, there are a number of dependable coffee shop franchises spread all across town. We love the traditional Vietnamese coffee at Phuc Long (pronounced 'phoop lawm') and the coconut coffee at Cộng Cà phê is second to none.

Additionally, although Hanoi is where egg coffee was first served, Saigon is home to several excellent cafés that serve this Vietnamese specialty. You should visit the trendy Okkio Cafe next to Ben Thanh market or the quaint Góc Hà Nội coffee shop hidden away in an alleyway off Bui Vien Street.

If you're looking for additional suggestions, check out our page detailing the top cafés and coffee shops in Ho Chi Minh City.

See The Saigon Skydeck at Bitexco Financial Tower

So far, Saigon's highest building is the Bitexco Financial Tower, which stands at 860 feet. If the weather is nice, you must go there to see the breathtaking views of the city below. The observation deck located on the 49th level is known as the Saigon Skydeck.

The observation deck has an admission price of 200,000 VND for adults, 130,000 for children aged 4 to 12, elderly, and those with impairments. For an additional 50,000 VND (which covers two drinks), you may add the World of Heineken.

Take a look at the 52nd-floor EON Heli Bar if you think the price is too high for a view alone. It costs nothing to visit, however it lacks the panoramic views offered by the sky deck. Although the cocktails are on the pricier side when compared to other Vietnam attractions, the breathtaking scenery more than makes up for it.

Visit Cu Chi Tunnels

Vietnamese forces utilized the 75-mile-long network of tunnels known as the Cu Chi Tunnels during the Vietnam War (or American War, to use their own terminology). They were places to hide and ways to get supplies and information.

Despite the deplorable living circumstances, several troops even made temporary residence in these tunnels. They had to contend with subterranean monsters on top of the fact that air and water were scarce. Living in the tunnels brought several illnesses to the soldiers, the most frequent of which being malaria.

Tourists may now crawl about in the tunnels' more secure sections and imagine what it was like for the troops to live through the battle. This trip is not recommended for those who have trouble breathing or are afraid of small spaces.

Address: Phu Hiep, Cu Chi, Ho Chi Minh City.
