A transfer from Hanoi to Tam Dao by private car takes about 1 hour 45 minutes and covers roughly 75 km from the Hanoi Old Quarter. Your driver picks you up at your hotel and drops you at your hotel or homestay in town, with no change of vehicle and no waiting at a station. Prices are per car, not per person, and start from USD 50 one way for a four-seat car.
Tam Dao is a small hill town about 900 metres above sea level, and it stays 5 to 8 degrees cooler than the city for most of the year. Many city residents drive up at weekends to escape Hanoi’s hustle and bustle, walk around the old stone church and enjoy the cool climate. With your own car and driver, a short trip like this stays short and simple.
Vietnam Trust Car Rental arranges private transfers from Hanoi to the northern hills and full-day car hire across northern Vietnam. Our office team answers on WhatsApp throughout your trip, and our drivers know the mountain road well, including the steep bends near the top.
It is one of Vietnam’s oldest hill stations, set in the Tam Dao mountains directly north of Hanoi. The town belonged to the former Vinh Phuc province, which became part of Phu Tho province in July 2025. The French built it as a mountain retreat in the early 1900s, and it is still the closest place for people in the capital to cool off in summer.

The road distance is 75 to 85 km, depending on where you start in the city. From Noi Bai International Airport, the drive is shorter, at about 60 km. Most of the trip is on a modern expressway, and only the last part is a mountain road.

Your driver leaves the city on the expressway toward Lao Cai, a fast, flat road past rice fields and new industrial parks. Near Vinh Yen, the car turns onto the provincial road toward the mountain. The last 13 km is a winding climb through pine forest, with hairpin bends and the temperature dropping as you go up.

The drive takes around 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours from the city centre in normal traffic. On Friday evenings and summer weekends, traffic leaving the city can add up to an hour, so an early start helps. Short stops for coffee or photos on the way up are no problem, and your driver can suggest a good place to pull over.
There are four main options. A bus from Hanoi leaves My Dinh bus station for the provincial capital at the foot of the mountain, and a local car then covers the last 25 km. It is cheap, but slow, with at least two changes and some waiting in between.
A self-ride motorbike trip suits experienced riders with a valid licence, but the bends near the top are steep, narrow and often wet with fog. It is also tiring with bags for an overnight stay.

Travelers getting into a tourist bus for their return journey from Tam Dao back to Hanoi
A taxi from Hanoi to Tam Dao costs about the same as a car with driver for a one-way trip. However, many city drivers refuse the mountain road or ask for a return fare, because they rarely find a passenger for the drive back down.
For most visitors, the easiest option is to choose a private car service. You get one car, one driver and one fixed price, from your hotel door in the city to your hotel door in the mountains.
You can book by WhatsApp, Viber or the booking form on this page. A travel consultant replies with a detailed quote, usually within one hour during office hours, and your booking is confirmed once you agree to the price.
Hotel pickup in Hanoi
Your driver arrives at your hotel, apartment or any pickup point in the city at the agreed time, whether that is Hoan Kiem, West Lake or Long Bien.

The car is already cool, bottled water is on the seat, and your bags go straight into the boot. Before leaving, the driver checks your drop-off address once more.
On the road
The expressway takes you out of the city quickly on a smooth, wide road. After about an hour, the car leaves the expressway and starts the climb, where the road narrows, the bends begin and the air turns noticeably cooler. If anyone needs a break, the driver can stop at a roadside café or a viewpoint on the way up.
Arrival in Tam Dao
The driver drops you at your hotel, homestay or any address in town and helps unload your bags. Some homestays sit on narrow lanes where larger vans cannot enter, and in that case the driver stops at the nearest point and helps carry your bags. Any balance not paid in advance is settled here.
When you book, please send your full name and phone number, your pickup address in the city, your hotel or address in town, the date and time you want to leave, and the number of passengers and luggage pieces. It also helps to tell us whether this is a day trip or an overnight stay, so we can plan your return in advance.
One of our travel tips for same-day trips: a 07:00 departure gives you a full day in the cool mountain air before the drive back, and it also avoids most of the weekend queue on the mountain road.
The return trip runs the same route in reverse, from your hotel in town to your address in the city, at the same price per leg. If you book both legs together, your return car is confirmed before you leave, which matters on Sunday afternoons when local drivers are often fully booked.

If you only have one day, the full-day package keeps the same car and driver with you for up to 10 hours. A typical itinerary looks like the plan below, and every stop can be longer or shorter so you travel at your own pace.
Pickup is at 07:00, and you reach the town around 09:00. The morning starts with the stone church and the main square, followed at 09:45 by the steps down to Silver Waterfall.

Lunch is at 11:30 at a local restaurant, where stir-fried chayote shoots and hill chicken are the usual dishes, at about 150,000 to 250,000 VND per person.
At 13:00, you can drive up to Heaven’s Gate for the view or take a short forest walk in the national park. After coffee in town at 14:45, the car leaves at 15:30 and reaches your hotel in the city between 17:30 and 18:00. The drive back on the expressway is a comfortable ride, and many guests sleep most of the way.
This 1-day plan covers the main sights without rushing. Guests who prefer temples can swap the afternoon for Tay Thien, which adds about an hour of driving.
3.1. Best time to visit
The town works as a getaway in every season, but each one feels different. Summer, from May to August, is the busiest time: while the city often passes 35°C, the hill station usually stays between 20°C and 26°C, and weekend hotels fill up fast. Spring and autumn, from March to May and September to November, bring mild days and fewer crowds.

In winter, from December to February, the town is often covered in fog and can drop below 10°C, so a warm jacket is needed. Locals say the weather can change several times in one day, so it is worth packing layers whatever the month. On weekdays outside summer, the town feels like a peaceful retreat with quiet streets and easy restaurant tables.
Stone Church
The stone church in the town centre is the most photographed landmark. French builders made it from grey mountain stone, and the square in front is where people gather in the evening. On clear days, the church steps give good views of the surrounding valley.

Silver Waterfall (Thac Bac)
A path of several hundred stone steps leads down through the forest to the falls, a short walk from the centre. The walk down takes about 20 minutes, and the climb back up is the harder half, so good shoes help.

Heaven’s Gate and the TV tower
Heaven’s Gate (Cong Troi) is a viewpoint above town that you can reach by car, with a wide view over the plains. A long stairway continues up to the TV tower on Thien Thi peak, a steep climb that is best done on a clear morning.

Tam Dao National Park
The park surrounds the town and protects a long belt of evergreen forest along the ridge. Short trails start near the centre, while longer treks need a local guide booked in advance. Walkers and birdwatchers come here for the natural beauty and the quiet.

Tam Dao National Park
Tay Thien temples
On the eastern side of the range, about 40 minutes by road, the Tay Thien complex has old temples, a Zen monastery and a cable car up the slope. At the foot of the mountain, the Tam Dao golf course has 18 holes set against the ridge, with a clubhouse and resort rooms on site.
Local food
Restaurants around the square serve stir-fried chayote shoots with garlic, free-range hill chicken and grilled pork. On cold evenings, street stalls sell hot corn and grilled sweet potato, a simple snack that most visitors end up trying.
A short trip should stay short. With a car and driver waiting at your hotel, you can decide in the morning and be in the mountains before lunch, with no timetable and no ticket counter.
You also travel door to door in one vehicle. There is no change at the bottom of the mountain and no search for a local car to cover the last 25 km. Our professional drivers know the hairpin section well and drive it slowly and steadily, which matters for children and anyone prone to motion sickness.
When you rent a car from Hanoi to Tam Dao with us, the price you confirm is the price you pay. Fuel, tolls, parking fees and the driver are all included, and the quotation shows any holiday surcharge before you pay anything. This fixed price keeps the trip hassle-free from start to finish.
Our car rental services cover every group size, from a Toyota Vios sedan for couples to spacious seven-seat cars, 16-seat Mercedes vans and limousine vans for families and groups. Every car is cleaned before each trip and checked against our safety standards before any mountain route.
Payment is flexible, too. You can pay online by card, by bank transfer, or in cash to the driver on the day, in VND or USD. Our goal is simple: a smooth drive up, a safe drive down, and a day out that is enjoyable and memorable for the right reasons.
After you book, you receive a WhatsApp or email message with the driver’s name, phone number, car model and licence plate. For last-minute trips, these details come as soon as your trip is confirmed, so you always know who to look for.
Your driver arrives at the agreed time with the air conditioning on, loads your bags and confirms your drop-off address before leaving. The driver speaks basic English for directions and simple requests, and our office team is on WhatsApp if you need help with anything else during the trip.
You are dropped at your hotel, homestay or any address in town, such as the stone church or the main square. The driver helps unload, checks the car for jackets, chargers and anything left on the seats, and any remaining balance is paid here.
Cancellation is free if you cancel at least 24 hours before pickup. Cancellations made less than 24 hours before pickup may be charged 50% of the fare, and a no-show without notice is charged in full. If your plans change, please let us know as early as possible so we can help you rebook.
Unlike group tours, a car with a driver has no fixed schedule and no stops at other hotels along the way. For two or more people, it is often the best value once you add up the bus fare, the last leg and the time spent waiting.
