The citadel was originally built of earth in 1804 during the reign of Emperor Gia Long and was rebuilt with stone in the 12th year of Emperor Minh Mạng's reign.

The ancient citadel of Nghe An is a historical testament from the Nguyen Dynasty to the resistance wars against colonial invaders, and is now a popular tourist destination in Nghe An.

The citadel has undergone several restorations but has been almost destroyed. The Tien Mon Gate is the most intact of the three gates.
